Lenten Preparation

What does Lent prepare us for? Today, as we begin the Lenten journey, I know we shall embrace the traditional Lenten discipline of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. I have found it compelling to invite you to look ahead and begin Lent with the vision of our celebration of Easter. Our minds and hearts are preparing to make once again our profession of faith to the whole world. United with the entire church, living on earth and in heaven, we proclaim the mysteries of God. On Holy Saturday, the vigil night, the church offers us a summary of what we have been preparing for. Here is the introduction of the vigil. Please take time to pray with these words, which form the apex of our Lenten discipline, the fruit of our fidelity, and the crown of our struggles.

Dear brethren (brothers and sisters),

on this most sacred night,

in which our Lord Jesus Christ

passed over from death to life,

the Church calls upon her sons and daughters,

scattered throughout the world,

to come together to watch and pray.

-If we keep the memorial

of the Lord's paschal solemnity in this way,

listening to his word and celebrating his mysteries,

then we shall have the sure hope

of sharing his triumph over death

and living with him in God.

My friends, Lent will be great. It is worth every effort. Lent means giving all to gain all. Giving ourselves and all we have. Above all, Lent is a school that helps us learn how to be in communion with Jesus, united in his passion. Keep Lent faithfully, and we shall share the victory and glory of our God. Have a happy Lent and let us journey together, encouraging each other like true brothers and sisters to a life of faith, communion, and love.

Jesus thy kingdom come! In my heart through Mary!  ~Fr. Gabriel
